Just What Is A Yeast Infection?
Yeast infections affect millions of women around the world. This disease affects women of all races equally and knows no socioeconomic boundaries.
In this article, we will explore what a yeast infection is, how it is acquired, and how it can be treated. Yeast infections are caused by the fungus Candida Albicans. This fungus is found world wide. It is normally present in small amounts in the mouth, vagina, and skin with no apparent symptoms.
Infection occurs when there is a change in the normal balance in the flora of the vagina, as well as the labia. This disruption allows growth of the Candida Albicans at levels higher than their normal baseline.
What are some of the symptoms associated with a yeast infection? Many women will first notice a discharge that is abnormal. It may be cottage-cheese like in appearance, that can be thin or thick in consistency. A burning sensation may be present in the vagina and labia. Another yeast infection symptom can be redness and edema of the vulvar skin. Painful intercourse and painful urination may be experienced in these fungal infections.
Once you think that you have an infection, what should you do? The first thing that you must do is contact your doctor and make an appointment. The reason is that it may not be the Candida Albicans infection, but something entirely else. And what works in treating yeast infection, may not be appropriate for other conditions.
After you have confirmed that it is in fact a yeast infection, the next step is to treat it. Traditional approaches include the use of anti-fungals such as miconazole. Clotrimazole is also another antifungal medication that has been proven to fight Candida Albicans. At one time these medications were available only by prescription. Now, they can be readily found at any pharmacy and even in most markets, over the counter.
Is there a natural remedy for yeast infection? Fortunately, there are natural treatments for these infections. One is to drink cranberry juice. Another is to eat more yogurt. These help kill the fungus and prevent future infections. They should be used in conjunction with medications approved by your doctor.
It is important to mention that you should consult your MD if your condition does not improve or continues to return. You may need other treatments or could have other diseases besides a yeast infection.
There are some preventative steps that you can take, such as wearing underwear and hosiery that have crotches composed of cotton. This works by absorbing the wetness and decreasing the medium that Candida needs to grow. Make it a point to wear clothes that you exercise in, only for a short amount of time. This also includes swimwear.
And there’s a great natural remedy to get rid of most yeast infections found here.
